Accepting Constructive Criticism
On a scale of 1-10, how coachable are you?
At first glance, it may seem this isn’t a question the average person would answer. And maybe if you have no desire to get better at what you do that’s true.
If that’s the case, stop reading right now. This article is not meant for you.
If you’re a person who strives to get better, who wants to hone your craft or become the best in your field, then you should hang around.
We get better with constructive criticism. Call it feedback. Call it coaching. It’s purpose is to help us improve.
Often times, we can find this kind of feedback difficult to accept because our egos are of the mindset they need no further improvement. The ego says, “Move along. We’re all good here. No improvement necessary.”
If you want to truly serve other people with your life, there is little room for your ego. So, let’s push that crazy narcissist aside and get real.
I shared that I don’t always like what I hear when I ask for input from others. Sometimes, the truth hurts. That doesn’t make it any less true.
I’d love to hear from you on this topic. When have there been times you didn’t handle criticism as well as you could have? When did you handle it like a boss and get markedly better performance from it?
Just remember, when we start to feel defensive, that’s our narcissistic ego chiming in. We need to silence that part of ourselves if we want to accept constructive feedback. It’s the key to getting better. Groove on!
